From the outside, it appeared to be just an ordinary marketing video sent to Paris Saint-Germain season ticket holders to try to coax them into a renewal.

But then, on Thursday, an Instagram story appeared on Kylian Mbappe’s account, expressing to his 102 million followers that he was unhappy about the whole thing.

“I have just taken part in the viewing of the club’s renewal campaign for the 23/24 season,” Mbappe wrote. “At no time was I informed of the content of the interview with my interviewer.

“It looked like a basic interview at a club marketing day. I don’t agree with this video posted.

“That’s why I fight for individual image rights. PSG is a big club and a big family, but it is certainly not Kylian Saint-Germain.”

This was not the first time Mbappe has used social media to vent his frustrations.

Last October, after a 0-0 Ligue 1 draw with Reims, Mbappe dropped a subtle message on an Instagram story about his perceived unhappiness at being played as a central striker. He used the hashtag #pivotgang. The context was that he had told the media while on international duty a month prior that he enjoyed the tactical setup with France. “I have a lot more freedom here, the coach knows there is a No 9 like Olivier (Giroud) who occupies the defences, I can walk around, go into space, ask for the ball. In Paris it’s different, there isn’t that, I’m asked to do the pivot.”

The intervention has only added to the looming sense of crisis that is enveloping PSG. Back-to-back league defeats have piled the pressure on manager Christophe Galtier, while Lionel Messi’s future is a soap opera of its own. On Friday, club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi flew into Paris to attend training and address the players directly.

Mbappe’s comments this week caused a stir, but they are not inconsequential in the current context. The reality is that this latest drama plays on the sensitivities surrounding his own future and the direction of PSG itself.

In the video clip, Mbappe is the only senior first-team player interviewed. That is partly due to issues around arranging times for interviews with training during the past week, but it partly explains the ‘Kylian Saint-Germain’ comment.

But it also showed what he perceives his current status to be at PSG, that he is able to publish his disapproval individually and publicly before the matter was resolved internally. PSG sources admitted there was an internal approval issue on video content for club season-ticket holders and confirmed that on Thursday afternoon a call was made with the player’s entourage to explain the issue and clear up misunderstandings.

Mbappe making a reference to his image rights is another intriguing aspect that has a back story of its own. Last year, with the France national team, he led a boycott of certain commercial activities by players who did not want to be associated with certain sectors — such as gambling websites and fast food chains. In September, he then refused to take part in a photoshoot with France until the France Football Federation changed the image rights agreement with their players.

But pertinently, image rights were at the heart of his negotiations with Real Madrid last summer, too. Those in Mbappe’s entourage, speaking on condition of anonymity to protect their relationships, relayed at the time that Real were willing to offer Mbappe 100 per cent control of his image rights, something PSG were unwilling to do. This was unprecedented. Ironically, the discussions around Mbappe’s renewal with the Parisian club last season left PSG with the strong impression he wished to be more front and centre of the club’s commercial output.

This, then, could easily be seen in the context of contract talks and positioning. A simple Instagram story has thrown the spotlight very much onto the discussions around his future.

Mbappe may not like the idea of ‘Kylian Saint-Germain’, but he is increasingly seen as the leading light in a star-studded team. He is an icon not only for PSG supporters but also for his country — an international talent now wearing the captain’s armband. Last month was possibly the most important of his career, when not only did he become PSG’s all-time leading goalscorer at the age of just 24, but he was also announced as captain of the France national team by coach Didier Deschamps.

For PSG, all of this makes him the greatest kind of asset, the type you would really want to build around and flaunt for ticket-sale purposes. His future is always going to be a point of obsession and evidently, as the anxieties spawned by this latest drama illustrate, this summer will be no different. This time last year, concern was rife about whether he would sign a new contract in the French capital or walk as a free agent in the summer.

But while he did put pen to paper, it was an agreement that still set up an inflection point for the end of this season. A deadline is coming up in less than two months and it is starting to focus minds in Paris and elsewhere. Mbappe’s contract runs until the summer of 2024 and includes a one-year option to extend until 2025, but that must be triggered before June 30 and only Mbappe has the power to do so.

That means more focus on his future and a public complaint about his appearance in a video aimed to sell next season to fans will inescapably fall into that context.

So, the big question. Will he stay with PSG or move on?

The Athletic has spoken to a range of sources with connections to the player and the club over the past few weeks to assess the current state of play and find out the direction of travel. As this week’s events have shown, there is still much to resolve.

PSG are the closest to what Mbappe could call his ‘hometown’ team. He grew up in Bondy, on the northeastern outskirts of Paris, and has been at PSG since a 2017 transfer from Monaco.

Last October, Le Parisien suggested his contract was worth €630million (£551m; $687m) before tax if extended into a third year. Last week, L’Equipe declared him the highest earner in world sport.

Mbappe has huge status in Paris. He has held influence on the club since re-signing, too, with the decision to appoint sporting director Luis Campos forming part of his renewal negotiations last year. The player was also involved in identifying targets such as Robert Lewandowski, Aurelien Tchouameni and Milan Skriniar and even discussed moves to Paris with Lewandowski and Tchouameni. This influence, along with a salary that reflects his position in the global game, grants him a status he is unlikely to find elsewhere.

But, despite widespread confidence at PSG that Mbappe would trigger the extra year in his contract earlier this year, his camp are known to have been apprehensive about his next steps.

Before the recent Champions League last-16 tie with Bayern Munich, multiple sources described how Mbappe had spoken more positively than ever about the PSG project. Since that tie though — a 3-0 aggregate defeat for the French club — his future has not seemed so clear.

Many things have not been plain sailing.

None of the three players mentioned who Mbappe was keen on signed for PSG this season (Skriniar will join them from Inter Milan this summer as a free agent) and he was previously thought to be unhappy at the club’s recruitment. Some sources relayed there was a sense he had been cheated and that the promised PSG project had not materialised — a view also said to be held by Campos. The club’s Portuguese sporting director felt he was not able to sign the desired players following his arrival last summer because others had not been sold to make the incoming deals financially viable.

What the project will look like next season, in terms of the squad make-up, will clearly be of vital importance for any future decision.

Should he decide to go, those close to Mbappe know the club will ask for a high price for him, or perhaps decide not to put a price on him at all — which would make a transfer almost impossible this summer.

The other element, of course, is the market for him.

Realistically, only a select group of clubs could afford him and at the top of that list are, surprise surprise, Real Madrid.

Mbappe has told his entourage he wants to play for Madrid at some point and the current Spanish, European and world champions — who have had contact with the player’s camp more than once this season — know of his wishes, but they have not forgotten what transpired last summer. Real Madrid president Florentino Perez felt betrayed by Mbappe’s decision to re-sign with PSG and that may affect the contract he could be offered in future. But while there is reticence, nothing can be ruled out.

An alternative could be Manchester United, although they currently do not need a player in his favoured position off the left side of attack with Marcus Rashford in exceptional form. When Mbappe was considering leaving PSG last July, Liverpool were also considered a potential destination for him by the French club but that feels unrealistic now in terms of finance and Liverpool’s struggle to qualify for the Champions League.

PSG are at a crossroads, trying to align a strategy that has involved recruiting elite individual talent while also building a team capable of European success. Mbappe is not the only contract on the table and what he ultimately decides could have a knock-on effect for others.

As well as 35-year-old Messi’s deal expiring in June, so does that of centre-back Sergio Ramos, who turned 37 last week, while two more defenders, Presnel Kimpembe and Marquinhos, are on course to be out of contract after next season. Neymar, now 31, is tied down until 2027 and wants to stay and there seems little chance he will move on.

Club president Al-Khelaifi confirmed late last month that the club wanted to sort extensions for Messi and Ramos, but what can be offered financially may be limited. Financial fair play (FFP) restrictions are a factor, with PSG having to watch their wage bill so they meet UEFA targets set after they breached a breakeven agreement between 2018 and 2022.

There was understandable delight within the club when Mbappe renewed his contract, as it meant not only keeping their most-prized talent but that they had a stronger negotiating position should he decide not to further extend his deal. Even so, PSG will want to avoid him leaving for free after next season, if at all.

Talks about Mbappe’s future were planned after Champions League elimination by Bayern last month and the expectation is there will be more discussions at the end of the season.

Those in his camp say no decision has yet been reached and there is caution about making the wrong move.

There is, of course, a lot to consider for Mbappe, beyond just the club he might end up at next.

He has national treasure status in France, something that was evident as he renewed his contract. The nation’s current president, Emmanuel Macron, and Nicolas Sarkozy, who held that office from 2007-12, both spoke to him during last year’s negotiation process. “We talked a lot,” Mbappe told French TV channel TF1. “They (Sarkozy and Macron) strongly advised me to stay in my country and continue to write the history of my club.”

Last year, there was the added focus on the looming World Cup in Qatar — as it turned out, losing Mbappe would have deprived the club’s Qatari ownership of a ‘PSG’ final, with Mbappe and Messi the stars of the show for France and Argentina respectively.

For France as a nation, the focus now is on the build-up to the 2024 summer Olympic Games in Paris and having their most famous athlete continuing as a resident of their capital city would obviously be appealing.

For Mbappe, keeping the focus on his on-field future and prospects will be key. That, as this week has shown, is not always easy in Paris.
