Furthermore, I’ll share comparisons between the laptop and its closest competitors after each area of this review. If necessary, I will also provide benchmark results.

In addition, I will discuss the Lenovo Ideapad L340’s positive and negative features in this review.

By the end of this review, you will have all the information you need to make an informed purchasing decision.

My Initial Thoughts

Lenovo IdeaPad L340 Review: My Initial Thoughts

Lenovo’s Ideapad L340 Gaming Laptop is the company’s first entry into the gaming laptop market. Despite certain flaws, it’s a decently-built laptop for its price tag.

Furthermore, the Lenovo Ideapad L340 comes in two different models, the Lenovo Ideapad L340 15 inch model and Lenovo Ideapad L340 17 inch model. Both models of the laptop are reasonably priced.

The Lenovo IdeaPad L340 is a very stylish laptop, which is unusual for such a low price.

Speaking of price, the Lenovo Ideapad L340 15-inch model price starts at $649.00 at the time of this review’s publication. The Lenovo Ideapad L340 17-inch model, on the other hand, starts at $899.99.

In the remaining sections of this guide, I will dive deep into the design and performance of the laptop in difference areas.

Lenovo IdeaPad L340 Design, Dimension & Weight Review

As previously stated, the Lenovo IdeaPad L340 is offered in two models, both of which have comparable features. Their size and weight are the most significant differences between them.

Lenovo’s IdeaPad L340 has a brushed black chassis with a prominent blue keyboard lighting, similar to its Acer and ASUS competitors. However, because it is priced lower than its competitors, there is reason to begin appreciating the materials used here.

Furthermore, the soft-touch palm rest is a step up from hard plastic in terms of aesthetics – although it’s not as attractive as the Acer predator Helios 300. However, the palm rest on Lenovo Ideapad L340 is easier to keep clean.

For a relatively affordable gaming laptop, the casing of the Lenovo IdeaPad L340 is reasonably slim. Although, the side screen bezels on the laptop aren’t as thin as those on the more expensive MSI GS65 Stealth.

However, the bezels are thin enough to give the Lenovo IdeaPad L340 a modern look. Although Lenovo is striving to achieve thin-is-in, they were able to include a webcam on the top bezel.

In addition, the HD 720p webcam on the Laptop has a dual-array mic and a physical shutter. Unfortunately, the laptop lacks an optical drive.

Furthermore, the Lenovo IdeaPad L340’s screen has an IPS display. This means you’ll receive better viewing angles and colors than with a standard LED display.

Unfortunately, the laptop does not support a 4K display. This is understandable since the IdeaPad L340 is a budget-friendly laptop, and the hardware required to run a 4K displays on a laptop is quite expensive.

Moving on, the Lenovo IdeaPad L340 joins the likes of Acer’s Helios 300 in having a monochrome keyboard backlighting. The keyboard’s two-stage illumination is uniform across all keys and can be adjusted for both indoor and outdoor use.

Additionally, it’s a full-size keyboard has a regular number pad, a short travel distance, and a precise pressure point. Even though the arrow keys are smaller than the rest of the keys, the keyboard feels comfortable to type on.

Underneath the keyboard is the ClickPad, which sits on the keyboard’s frame and makes rattling noises when used. However, the ClickPad only responds to severe pressure on the pads’ bottom corners.

Furthermore, the Lenovo IdeaPad L340 performs admirably in terms of overall brightness. Unfortunately, the color reproduction is on the lower end of the spectrum, at around 50% of sRGB.

However, the laptop performs excellently in terms of blue light emissions also. The blue light emissions are very useful, particularly if you’ll be spending a lot of time in front of the screen.

Moving on to ports, the IdeaPad L340 has the most basic ports for a modern laptop in both the 15″ and the 17″ models. However, except for a Kensington lock on the right side, all ports are on the left side of the laptop.

Both models of the laptop come with a USB Type-C port, two USB 3.1 ports, an Ethernet port, and an HDMI 2.0 port. Unfortunately, it lacks an SD card port as well as a Thunderbolt port.

However, the laptop also includes wireless connectivity such as the 802.11 AC Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2.

In terms of dimensions and weight, both models of the laptop are smaller and lighter than most of their competitors.

The Lenovo IdeaPad L340 15 inch for instance weighs 2190g and measures 363 x 254.6 x 23.9mm (W x D x H). On the other hand, the Lenovo IdeaPad L340 17 inch measures 413 x 284.6 x 24.4 mm and weighs 2800g.

In comparison, the IdeaPad L340 15 inch model is lighter than the Acer predator Helios 300 which measures 363.2 x 254 x 22.8 and weighs 2499g. On the other hand, the Lenovo IdeaPad L340 17-inch is significantly heavier than the Acer predator Helios 300.

Finally, the keyboard design and overall simplicity of this laptop are definitely some of its strongest features. As a result, in this review, I’ll rate the Lenovo IdeaPad L340 a nine out of 10.

Lenovo IdeaPad L340 Processor (CPU) Performance Review

Lenovo IdeaPad L340 Processor (CPU) Performance Review

Both models of the Lenovo IdeaPad L340 come with a 9th Gen Intel Core i7-9750H processor. The Lenovo IdeaPad L340 17-inch model, on the other hand, may also ship with AMD Ryzen 5 3500U processor.

The Intel Core i7-9750H is a 6-core processor with a 12-MB cache. The processor operates at a base frequency of 2.6MHz and a maximum frequency of 4.50MHz.

Furthermore, the Intel Core i7-9750H is a powerful processor that can multitask without lagging.

The AMD Ryzen 5 3500U, on the other hand, is a four-core processor with a 4MB cache. It has a maximum frequency of 3.70MHz and a base frequency of 2.10MHz.

However, this processor is clearly not as good as the 9th gen Intel Core i7, but it will still be able to multitask adequately.

Moving on, the model I reviewed had an Intel Core i7-9750H processor. I performed a Geekbench 5 test to see how efficient the processor is.

Based on the result of the benchmark test, the laptop scored 5813 points in the test. Compared to the Acer predator Helios 300’s 11th Gen Intel Core i7-10750H processor, Lenovo Ideapad L340 underperformed.

The Acer predator Helios 300 scored 6312 points.

Finally, the processor performance of the laptop falls short of the Acer predator Helios 300. It did, however, outperform other computers in its category.

As a result, for processor performance, I’ll rate the Lenovo IdeaPad L340 an eight in this aspect.

Lenovo IdeaPad L340 Memory (RAM) Performance Review

The Lenovo IdeaPad L340 is not lacking in terms of RAM. The laptop has two RAM slots, that can take a total capacity of 16GB (8 GB in each slot).

I strongly advise you to purchase an IdeaPad L340 with at least 8 GB of RAM for optimal performance. However, because there are two RAM slots on the laptop, you can extend the memory by adding an additional 8 GB in the second slot if you need to.

The laptop I reviewed came with 8GB of RAM installed in a single slot. To properly evaluate the performance of the RAM, I carried out a PCMark 10 benchmark test.

As a result of the test, the Lenovo IdeaPad L340 scored 5100 points, which is lower than the Lenovo Legion Y530-15ICH, which scored 5118 points. On the other hand, the Lenovo IdeaPad L340 outperformed the Acer predator Helios 300, which scored 4973 points.

Overall, I rate the Lenovo IdeaPad L340’s RAM performance a nine.

Lenovo IdeaPad L340 Storage Option & Performance Review

Lenovo IdeaPad L340 Storage Option & Performance Review

The Lenovo IdeaPad L340 has a lot of storage options. It has a 1TB PCIe SSD, a 2TB HDD, and optional Intel Optane storage of up to 16 GB.

The ideal storage configuration will be a 128 GB SSD for installing your operating system and a 512 GB HDD for storing your files.

If you have a large storage requirement, you can add up to a 1 TB HDD. Unfortunately, the laptop does not offer a microSD card slot.

Nevertheless, the SSD/HDD storage combo should be sufficient for most users.

The model I reviewed came with a 256 GB SSD. As we always do in our laptop reviews, I performed a CrystalDiskMark test to determine the storage performance of the laptop.

The Lenovo IdeaPad L340 achieved a sequential read speed of 1200 Mbps and a sequential write speed of 145.1 Mbps in the CrystalDiskMark test. This write speed is faster than the 129 Mbps category average.

In addition, the Lenovo IdeaPad L340’s sequential read speed of 1200 Mbps is also faster than the category average of 817 Mbps.

However, in comparison, the Lenovo IdeaPad L340 performed less than the Lenovo Legion Y530-15ICH. The read speed of the Lenovo Legion Y530-15ICH was 1390 Mbps, and the write speed was 300 Mbps.

Overall, the Lenovo IdeaPad L340’s storage is quite okay for its price. As a result, I will give Lenovo IdeaPad L340 a seven out of ten for storage performance.

Lenovo IdeaPad L340 Graphic Card Performance Review

Lenovo IdeaPad L340 Graphic Card Performance Review

Lenovo IdeaPad L340 is an excellent gaming laptop in terms of graphics. The laptop offers multiple graphics options.

You can get the laptop with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 – GDDR5, or NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 – GDDR6. Additionally, you can buy Lenovo IdeaPad L340 with integrated AMD Radeon Vega 8 graphics.

Except for the AMD Radeon Vega 8 Graphics card, all of these graphics cards feature 4GB of dedicated memory.

Before I discuss the gaming performance of the laptop, let me quickly share the specifications of the graphic cards.

The AMD Radeon Vega 8 graphics card offers a base frequency of 300MHz and a boost frequency of 1100MHz.

On the other hand, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 – GDDR5 offers a base frequency of 1485MHz and a 1665MHz boost frequency. Finally, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 – GDDR6, on the other hand, has a base frequency of 1410MHz and a boost frequency of 1590MHz.

Now that we are done with the formalities, let’s dive into the gaming performance of the Lenovo IdeaPad L340. It is worth mentioning that my test unit came with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 graphics card.

Let me start by confirming that with this graphics card, you can play most modern games at Full HD quality. However, for some games, you may need to adjust the graphics settings at times.

To test the graphics card performance of this laptop, I played some graphically demanding games such as Far Cry 5 and Rise of the Tomb Raider. While playing Far Cry 5, the laptop delivers 97 fps in normal settings but drops to 81 fps in Ultra settings.

However, with Rise of the Tomb Raider, on the other hand, the laptop achieves 125fps in medium settings, and in very high settings, it achieves 97 fps. Both results are slightly higher than the Acer Predator Helios 300 with Nvidia’s GTX 1660 Ti graphics card.

For instance, the Acer Predator Helios 300 achieved 119fps on medium setting and 86fps on high setting while playing Rise of the Tomb Raider.

As a result of its gaming performance, I’m happy to rate the Lenovo IdeaPad L340 an eight in this review because it outperformed competing laptops.

Lenovo IdeaPad L340 Battery Life & Performance

The Lenovo IdeaPad L340 comes with a Lithium-ion battery in both the 15″ and the 17″ models. According to Lenovo, when fully charged both models should deliver up to 9.5 hours.

However, we know too well not to take manufacturers’ word for it! To verify Lenovo’s claim, I carried a real-life battery test.

In my test, which involved surfing over 50 websites at the same time, the Lenovo IdeaPad L340 lasted about 6 hours in our online browsing test.

Although the battery fell shot of Lenovo’s advertised battery life of 9.5 hours, it still performed better than Dell G5 15 5587. Dell G5 15 5587 only lasted about 4 hours.

As a result of its outstanding battery life, I’m giving the Lenovo IdeaPad L340 an eight in this category.
