Anderlecht gave themselves hope in the UEFA Europa League tie with Manchester United on Thursday, scoring a late equaliser to earn a 1-1 draw in the first leg.

The visitors didn’t create many chances in the first half but made the most of their looks, as Henrikh Mkhitaryan converted a rebound to give his side the lead.

Anderlecht improved after the break and found a few half chances, and Leander Dendoncker deservedly headed home an equaliser.

For Anderlecht, star forward Lukasz Teodorczyk was kept on the bench in a surprise turn, indicating the Belgian side prioritised the play-offs in their own league.

Anderlecht predictably ceded possession to United, who struggled for creativity in the opening stages. Chances were few, with Frank Acheampong proving a real threat down the left wing and providing Isaac Kiese Thelin with the first chance of the match.

The Red Devils went very close with their first look, as Zlatan Ibrahimovic nearly turned a cross from Marcus Rashford home and Jesse Lingard struck the post with his rebound.

On the other side of the pitch, Mkhitaryan just missed the target with a spectacular volley after a great run from Matteo Darmian.

Anderlecht’s improvements meant United didn’t push forward for more goals, and chances became very few. Manager Jose Mourinho tried to counter by introducing Anthony Martial and Marouane Fellaini, but overall, the Red Devils seemed happy to preserve the lead.

Fellaini put goalkeeper Ruben Martinez to work with a low strike, and Paul Pogba perhaps should have scored moments later after a great pass from Ibrahimovic.

The goal fell on the other side of the pitch, however, as star youngster Dendoncker powered a header home.
