Japan has always been a hub of creativity, from its unique fashion and architecture to its famous anime and manga. But with the advent of artificial intelligence, the country is taking its creative endeavours to new heights. Enter “Cyberpunk: Peach John,” Japan’s first fully AI-drawn manga. While the storyline and dialogue were created by manga author Rootport (alias protecting his real name), the imagery was produced entirely by an AI image generator called Midjourney. This groundbreaking work was recently released by Shinchosha publishing house, and it has sparked a lively debate about the nature of art and creativity.

“an absolute insult to manga and mangaka (manga artists) everywhere.” — Twitter user

The story follows the Japanese folklore hero Momotaro, who is born from a giant peach, as he navigates a dystopian future. The author, who has never drawn a comic by hand, entered a string of text descriptions into Midjourney to create images that matched his storyline. The result is a stunning 100-page manga that is fully rendered in colour, a work of this scale would take over a year to complete by hand.

“If you consider [Marcel Duchamp and Andy Warhol’s] works to be art, there is no rational reason to treat AI differently,” Rootport stated.

Rootport gave his characters distinctive features such as pink hair, dog ears, or a red kimono to help readers recognize characters as the story progresses. However, the AI image generator struggled with replicating existing characters in new poses or with different facial expressions. “Even in legendary manga works, it is commonplace for the character drawings to differ between the beginning and the end of the series,” Rootport explained.

The process of creating manga using AI has raised questions about the nature of creativity and artistic integrity. The author likened arguments in favour of AI art to those used to defend Marcel Duchamp’s “Fountain” or Andy Warhol’s “Campbell’s Soup Cans,” works that utilized existing industrial products and label designs. “If you consider their works to be art, there is no rational reason to treat AI differently,” Rootport stated.

However, not everyone is convinced. Some critics have argued that AI-generated art lacks the soul and human touch that is essential to true artistic expression. One Twitter user called the project “an absolute insult to manga and mangaka (manga artists) everywhere.” Despite the debate, the author sees the use of AI as a tool to enhance creativity, rather than a replacement for human artists. “I do not believe that human manga artists will become unnecessary,” he added. “Both humans and AI create based on different experiences and backgrounds, and that will not change.”The use of AI technology in creative industries is not new.

Online AI imaging tools such as Midjourney, DALL-E 2, Stable Diffusion, and Google’s Imagen have become increasingly popular since they became publicly available last year. However, the technology is still in its infancy, and the author had to refine his text prompts using trial and error to create the perfect image for a specific scene. Putting technical challenges aside, AI-generated art might have a bright future. The manga includes a 10-page how-to guide that teaches readers how to produce their AI-generated manga.

Japan’s first AI-generated manga has made waves in the creative world, sparking debates about the nature of art and the role of technology in creative expression. While some may argue that it lacks the emotional depth and nuance of human-created manga, others are intrigued by the possibilities that AI-generated manga could bring to the industry. Regardless of one’s stance on the matter, it is clear that the intersection of technology and art continues to push boundaries and challenge our perceptions of creativity. Who knows what other groundbreaking developments the future holds? As for the AI-generated manga, only time will tell whether it will be a passing fad or a trailblazer for a new era of manga storytelling.
