Tuesday marks five years to the day since Monaco claimed a stunning win over Manchester City to dump Pep Guardiola’s side out of the Champions League. City were 13 minutes from a place in the quarter-finals having taken a 5-3 lead into the game from the first leg of their last 16 tie.

But Kylian Mbappe opened the scoring for a dominant Monaco in the reverse fixture at the Stade Louis II, before Fabinho doubled their lead with a crisp finish. Leroy Sane appeared to have booked City’s place in the last eight when he swept in from close-range, but Tiemoue Bakayoko headed in what proved to be Monaco’s winner with 13 minutes remaining.

It was the first time that a Guardiola side had been knocked out at the last 16 stage, while Monaco reached the semi-finals before being knocked out by Juventus. Here, Mirror Football takes a look at where their star-studded starting line-up are now.

Danijel Subasic started in goal for Monaco that night, going on to win Ligue 1’s keeper of the year award that season. The Croatian spent three more years in the Principality before being released and ended his season-long spell out of the game by joining Hajuk Split last September.

Right-back Djibril Sidibé is still at Monaco, making 24 appearances in all competitions so far this season. The Frenchman spent a season on loan at Everton during 2019/2020, though the Toffees turned down the chance to turn that deal into a permanent one.

Monaco was the final stop of Andrea Raggi’s 16-year career, and the only club he played for outside of Serie A. His departure in 2019 was acrimonious, with Raggi returning to Italy and retiring rather than joining a new club.

Former Brazilian international Jemerson spent three more years at Monaco before terminating his contract and returning to his homeland to play for Corinthians. The centre-half is now back in Ligue 1 at Metz, who he has made 12 appearances for in their battle against relegation.

The last 16 clash was likely the point at which Guardiola opted to sign Bernardo Silva after his starring role in Monaco’s midfield. Silva joined City in the summer of 2017 and has gone on to become one of their most important players, winning the club’s Player of the Year award in his second season at the Etihad.

The scorer of Monaco’s second goal in the second leg, Fabinho, would spend one more year at the club before joining Liverpool for £39million. He has been a stalwart in midfield ever since, helping the Reds to win the Premier League, Champions League and Carabao Cup.

Much like Silva, Tiémoué Bakayoko’s performance against City earned him a big-money move to the Premier League, with Chelsea being his destination. But he has struggled since joining the Blues, instead being sent out on a series of loans, with AC Milan being his latest destination.

Thomas Lemar spent another season at Monaco before joining Atletico Madrid in a £59m deal. The midfielder has become a key player under Diego Simeone and made 27 appearances as Atletico won the La Liga title last term.

Monaco’s title-winning campaign was Valere Germain’s final one at the Stade Louis II before he joined Marseille. The Frenchman moved to Montpellier last summer and he has been a regular starter under Olivier Dall’Oglio.

Arguably the biggest name in Monaco’s brilliant line-up was Kylian Mbappe, with the Frenchman recognised as one of the best players in the world. Mbappe joined PSG in the summer of 2017, and has starred at the Parc des Princes, but now looks set to join Real Madrid on a free transfer.
